The media are calling it the 'beast from the east' - however to the rest of us it is simply soo much snow! More than many of the students will have seen before.
Thankfully this kind of weather is a very rare occurrence, however, weather like this creates one of the most difficult decision for a Head of School. Should the school stay open or be closed. Early Tuesday morning our site team had done a great job of clearing the site before heavy snowfall that started just before 6am (and over the next couple of hours) closed the drive and access to the site. Despite repeated attempts by the team to get our access clear and safe it was soon covered again and again. Since then the weather and conditions have got much worse. The site team have been working from 4am each day to try to open the site and make it safe but we have been unable to do so... maybe the 'beast from the east' is an apt name after all.
As I am sure you are aware the Met Office has issued a number of Amber weather warnings for snow. This included the West Yorkshire area. The Local Authority have now advised that 'as a result of the severe weather which is forecast to continue into the weekend that schools remain closed on Friday 2 March'. The Local Authority, and our own, priority is 'to ensure the safety of staff and pupils during this period of severe weather'.
Whenever a school is shut it creates difficulties for parents and carers as well as staff. However, as is the case with all schools in the Beckfoot Trust, when making this decision there is a single priority; the safety of our 1600 students and the adults in our community. We consider the condition of the site, the ability of students and staff to get to school safely; then finally we have to be certain that we can get our students and staff home safely at the end of the day. Hopefully information on the website, Bradford Schools Online and texts to parents and carers have ensured that everyone knows quickly that school is not open. If you have had any difficulties in accessing any of these forms of communication, please let us know.
Meanwhile, there has been a lot of work provided for students by their teachers on ClassCharts https://www.classcharts.com/student/login. Students need to access and complete the work that is being set. As parents and carers you can support your child by helping them to access this work and encouraging them to complete it. Our Year 11 students have been in the middle of their mock GCSE exams. They have revised hard and put a lot of effort into getting ready for these. We are in the process of re-working the timetable for the final few mock exams and we will post details of the amendments on the website as well as messaging students with the information.
I thank you all for your patience and look forward to some improving weather!
