The Careers Department seeks to ensure that each student receives a comprehensive careers education via the tutorial programme, individual guidance and counselling and in a work placement situation. The outcomes of which are:
These aims are achieved through a comprehensive programme of activities to which all students are entitled. Careers education and guidance is part of the tutor programme for all year groups. Alongside this the Careers Information Centre is open and staffed every lunchtime and after school. The school works in partnership with the Connexions Service who support and complement the careers programme and provide guidance to individuals.
- The development of skills in the areas of self-assessment, decision-making , information gathering, target setting, communication and personal effectiveness.
- A knowledge and understanding of the modem industrial and commercial environment.
- The ability make the transition from school to the working world as effectively as possible.
- The confidence to make an informed choice with regard to their future career regardless of academic ability, gender or ethnic background.
- Acquiring attitudes that help break down barriers to equal opportunities.
Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 are counselled about likely careers intentions and may be referred for a formal guidance interview with a Connexions Personal Advisor. If parents have concerns they too can request additional support from Connexions Personal Advisor by contacting the Careers Department.
Year 11 students also take part in a Mock Interview with an employer, the preparation for which includes the writing of letters of application and CVs . This is designed to equip them with the necessary skills for entry into the working world .
A period of Work Experience is arranged for Year 10 students on the Work Related Learning course and for all students in Year 11. Most of the placements are of one week's duration, but the scheme is flexible and can, if necessary, be tailored to individual needs. Students are prepared fully forĀ these placements.
This pattern of advice, counselling and work experience continues through Years 12 and 13 which includes preparation for college and university entrance.
