Beckfoot Oakbank School update letter

January 16th 2019

Dear Parents, Carers and Students

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and to thank you for your support during the Autumn term. As families, your engagement with school last term was the best that it has ever been with record numbers attending our Open Evening, Parental Engagement Evenings and Parents Evenings. It is so important that we work together to improve the life chances of all 1525 students. As you are aware I joined Beckfoot Oakbank on the 4th June 2018 as the Head of School, coming from Beckfoot as the Deputy Head. I have been part of Oakbank and then Beckfoot and then the Trust since 2006 and am fully committed to this fantastic school, the students and the staff. I am absolutely delighted to let you know that I have been made the permanent Headteacher of Beckfoot Oakbank; I am here for the long run! It is a complete honor and privilege and I am looking forward to working with our whole community to move us from our current position to one of the top 20% of comprehensive schools in the country. It won’t happen overnight but with everyone working together I am confident that we can get there.

It is true what they say that everything happens at once! I also need to let you know that I am expecting a baby in June and as a first time mum I am thrilled to bits. I will not be here from June until December whilst I do my ‘other job’ for a short while. It is great news that I can report that Liz Hart will take my maternity cover for this period. Liz is an exceptional colleague. She has had many years of experience in leading a school and working with senior leadership teams. She has been part of Beckfoot Trust for the last 2 years and has been integral to the improvement of maths across the Trust during that period as well as whole school improvement in a number of schools. She has been on Beckfoot Oakbank Senior Leadership team since February last year and knows the staff, the students and many of you as families already. Liz will be working closely with me, David Horn (CEO of the Trust) and Simon Wade (Headteacher at Beckfoot Upper Heaton) during my leave. The staff and I are very pleased that there will be a smooth transition for the short period of time that I am not here.

While I am writing can I remind you of some important upcoming dates:

Please can you only book holidays in the school holiday dates. No holidays in term time will be approved. Students must have 100% attendance in school for their future success.

A reminder of our priorities this year:
To improve leadership at all levels across school.
To improve the teaching quality especially in English, Maths and Science and outcomes for students.
To improve our students’ attendance because every day really does count.
To embed our new positive learning strategy – rewards and sanctions.
To continue to ensure that our curriculum has breadth, is linked to local agendas and that ‘enjoy, learning and succeed’ really does happen through our curriculum.

We were pleased to get our car parking facilities back and we really appreciate your patience, and that of our local neighbours whilst the building work has been completed. Can I remind you all that students leave the school or get collected from the top of the drive or at the bottom by the bus bay. We look forward to having our new outdoor sports facilities completed by Easter to complete our fantastic new building and grounds.
